When you hear "Japanese culture," what images come to mind?
Perhaps it's the serene beauty of Kyoto's temples and shrines, the majestic Mount Fuji, or the breathtaking cherry blossoms in full bloom.
While these iconic landscapes and historical landmarks are certainly captivating, the true essence of Japanese culture goes far beyond what meets the eye.
Recently, I had a delightful encounter at the Valentine's Day fair in Namba's Takashimaya department store. I stumbled upon a chocolate brand called "Kanmi Garo" (甘味画廊)【https://www.goncharoff.co.jp/book/vd/2025kanmigaro/book/html5m.html#page=1】, and I was so impressed by its beauty and the respect it showed for Japanese culture that I felt compelled to write about it. (This isn't an advertisement for Kanmi Garo, by the way.)

The Foundation of Japanese Culture
At the heart of Japanese culture lies the concept of animism. This ancient belief system holds that spirits reside in all things, both natural and man-made.
Animism has fostered a sense of tolerance and acceptance towards other cultures, religions, and ways of thinking.
Embracing Diversity
Since the Meiji era, Japan has actively embraced foreign cultures to fuel its economic growth.
Western-style architecture has become commonplace, Western clothing is the norm, and even wedding ceremonies often take place in churches with brides donning traditional white dresses. When it comes to dining, you're just as likely to find Italian or French restaurants as you are to find traditional Japanese cuisine.
A Cultural Reawakening
Paradoxically, as Japan embraced foreign cultures, there was a tendency to overlook and even undervalue its own rich heritage.
For instance, someone wearing a kimono in public might be seen as an oddity, despite the fact that it's a traditional garment created by our ancestors.
However, with the recent influx of international tourists, the Japanese people have begun to rediscover the true value of their own culture.
The Evolution of Japanese Culture
Today, we see a resurgence of Japanese culture in various forms: interior designs incorporating elements of traditional Japanese clothing, smartphone cases adorned with artwork by Japanese painters, and innovative fusion cuisine that blends French and Japanese flavors.
When Chocolate Meets Japanese Art
One particular example that caught my attention is a line of chocolates that beautifully incorporates Japanese art.
These unique treats look like traditional Japanese sweets (wagashi) but taste like chocolate, all while embodying the essence of Japanese art.
They're called "Kanmi Garo" (甘味画廊). It means Sweety Gallery.

The Vision Behind Kanmi Garo
In a world where Western-style sweets dominate, Kanmi Garo offers a fresh perspective on traditional Japanese confectionery.
In Japan today, people are willing to pay upwards of 500 yen for a single piece of gourmet chocolate. Kanmi Garo cleverly combines this fascination with chocolate with a deep respect for Japanese culture, making it more accessible and relatable to a wider audience.
Incorporating Japanese Culture into Everyday Life
By weaving elements of Japanese culture into our daily lives, we can evoke a sense of familiarity and appreciation for its beauty.
Even if we don't fully grasp the intricacies of Japanese culture, these subtle encounters can spark an interest and a desire to learn more.
