Discovering Nagano's History and Nature

I recently had the pleasure of accompanying a group of visitors from Spain on a tour of Nagano Prefecture. We designed the trip to immerse them in Japan's rich history, culture, and breathtaking nature. Here's a report on our unforgettable journey!

Stepping Back in Time: Narai-juku

ree

Our first stop was Narai-juku, a post town that still retains the atmosphere of the Edo period. As a designated Important Preservation District for Groups of Historic Buildings, walking its cobblestone streets felt like stepping back in time. The group loved exploring the historic buildings and traditional shops, getting a glimpse into a traditional Japanese way of life. The beautiful old streets were a huge hit with everyone.

A Spiritual Power Spot: Togakushi Shrine

Next, we ventured into the deep forest to visit Togakushi Shrine. The path lined with 400-year-old cedar trees created a truly sacred atmosphere. As we walked, it felt as if our spirits were being cleansed. The tour took us to the Kuzuryu-sha, Chu-sha, and Oku-sha (main shrine), offering a unique encounter with the mysteries of Shintoism. The hike to the Oku-sha was a bit challenging, but the sense of accomplishment and the incredible view at the end made it all worthwhile.

The Heart of Faith: Zenko-ji Temple

Our next destination was Zenko-ji Temple, one of Nagano's most famous temples. The temple's philosophy of welcoming all, regardless of denomination, resonated deeply with our guests. They also participated in a private meditation session, where they learned about Buddhist teachings directly from a monk.

Japan's Beautiful National Treasure: Matsumoto Castle

We concluded our trip at Matsumoto Castle, a designated National Treasure. The castle's stunning black and white exterior is particularly elegant and captivates many visitors. We went inside and climbed the steep stairs, learning about the castle's architecture and history. The view of Matsumoto city from the top of the keep was spectacular, and everyone appreciated the beauty of Japanese castle design.

This tour was a truly fulfilling experience. It was a joy to share Japan's history, culture, and nature with people from another country, transcending language barriers to connect over shared experiences. I look forward to continuing to share the diverse charms of Nagano with the world!
